Anthony T. Eyton

Senior International Trade Advisor / Ottawa

Ambassador Eyton is a Senior International Trade Advisor consulting for Cassidy Levy Kent’s Ottawa office. Ambassador Eyton has had an extensive and wide-ranging career in government and in the private sector with a career focus on international trade policy, export and import control management, international trade and investment development, and trade remedy litigation in support of Canadian and foreign companies.

In the private sector, Ambassador Eyton headed up the international trade and investment consulting practice at a major Canadian consulting firm, and undertook a variety of assignments in Toronto, Ottawa, Washington, the Philippines, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, the Bahamas and the United Arab Emirates. In 2000, Ambassador Eyton was recruited to become the CEO of a Canadian private company that selected, funded and managed a large portfolio of national R&D projects in intelligent systems (artificial intelligence, robotics, machine visioning, etc.) through partnerships between leading edge technology companies and university researchers. Simultaneously, Ambassador Eyton incorporated an active consulting practice and acted as lead counsel or co-counsel to Canadian and foreign companies implicated in Canadian antidumping and subsidy/countervail actions (Korean producers of steel products, and Canadian producers of ethanol, biofuels, xanthates and polyiso boards), as well as providing trade policy advice to governments, including Qatar, the Bahamas, the Philippines and Trinidad and Tobago.

Government Service

Ambassador Eyton enjoyed a wide-ranging federal public service career that included assignments abroad as Executive Director of the Asian Development Bank, Ambassador to Brazil, and Consul General in New York. Assignments in Ottawa included Director General of the Trade Commissioner Service, Assistant Deputy Minister (International Market Development), Assistant Deputy Minister (Personnel) and Assistant Deputy Minister (International Economic and Trade Policy). In the latter position, he was responsible for the management of Canadian international trade disputes and led numerous bilateral trade negotiations. For the period 1991-1993, Mr. Eyton was the Associate Deputy Minister in charge of the Government’s Prosperity Initiative, and, from 1993-1997, he was the Chairman of the Canadian International Trade Tribunal.
