Remembering our Friend and Partner
John relished negotiating trade agreements, litigating trade cases, and writing and lecturing about the evolution of the international trading system. As Deputy General Counsel in the Office of the United States Trade Representative, John negotiated ground-breaking antidumping and subsidies agreements during the Tokyo Round of Trade Negotiations; John then had the unique experience of then having to implement both agreements when he became the first head of the Department of Commerce’s Office of Import Administration. During his 30-plus years of private practice, John was a central figure in most of the major trade disputes argued before the Department of Commerce, the U.S. International Trade Commission, the U.S. Court of International Trade, and the World Trade Organization’s dispute settlement panels. Clients and peers long recognized his skills and eloquence as an advocate, regularly selecting him as one of the very best U.S. trade lawyers. John also took great pride as a teacher and thought leader in his service as an adjunct professor at the Georgetown University Law Center and the George Washington University Law School, and in the scores of legal articles he authored and speeches he gave over the years.
To help celebrate John’s memory, Cassidy Levy Kent is honored to announce the creation of the John D. Greenwald Memorial Endowment at the Georgetown University Law Center, which will support student awards and an annual lecture on international trade law.
